From 10am last Saturday, Elle Jones Studios in Lancaster was buzzing with the creativity of our latest portrait photography course. These day courses are held every other month and are a fantastic chance to polish up on your photography skills. This was a portrait specific in which we learnt how other photographers, past and present have approached the subject of portraiture and honed their craft.
The morning’s delegates arrived to the smell of freshly brewed coffee and indulged in a chocolate biscuit or two as they said hello to fellow photographers on their course. Once everyone had arrived we settled into the viewing room to watch the first of the days presentation on Cecil Beaton.
We learnt about Beaton’s theatrical and flamboyant style of posing and then we had a go at putting it into practice. I lead the group through the first few shots, explaining what to look for and how to tweak it, and then the group split into pairs and taking it in turns to pose each model and create Beaton inspired portraits.
The morning flew by and before long it was time to for everyone to relax and fill up on the scrummy lunch and share the tips they’s picked up from their morning’s work.
Then break over, it was time to settle down to presentation two on Yousef Karsh, and learn about his unique approach to his subjects and his own portrait photography techniques which we then practiced on the models.
The final presentation of our latest creative portrait photography course was on Annie Leibovitz in which we discussed her famous Lennon portrait and her long exposure with flash technique. We finished the day creating a dramatic group shot using Annie’s technique.
Then there was just enough time for a coffee and one last biscuit while we all sat back and watched the spoils of the day on the big screen!
